What is bachata?
Bachata is a romantic partner dance with a side-to-side basic of three steps and a tap (or hip pop) on 4 and 8. It can be danced in a close embrace or open position, and its modern sensual style adds body waves, head rolls and dips.
History
Bachata music emerged in the Dominican Republic in the early 1960s; José Manuel Calderón's 1962 recordings are usually counted as the first. Long dismissed as "music of bitterness" (música de amargue), it became mainstream in the 1990s through Juan Luis Guerra and in the 2000s through Aventura and Romeo Santos. Bachata sensual, developed in Spain in the 2010s, now dominates many dance congresses.
Basic technique
- Side basic — 1-2-3-tap, 5-6-7-tap
- Box basic and forward/back basic
- Turns, body waves and hip isolations (sensual)
- Dominican footwork and syncopations
Music & tempo
Usually 110–150 BPM; modern bachata pop sits around 120–135. The güira and bongo make the count easy to hear.
